Auto insurance protects you against financial loss if you have an accident. It is a contract between you and the insurance company. You agree to pay the premium and the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as defined in your policy. Pretty straightforward.
Auto insurance provides physical damage, liability, medical coverage, personal injury protection, rental and tow:
- Physical damage is collision (damage from another object) and comprehensive (fire, theft, glass, vandalism- other than collision) to your car.
- Property damage is damage to another’s property caused by you. This can include vehicles, guardrails, fences, and yes, a house or building.
- Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage.
- Medical coverage pays for the cost of treating injuries. Personal Injury Protection pays for medical and loss wages.
- Rental pays up to coverage limit, the cost to rent a car due to damage to your car from a covered loss.
- Tow or disablement pays for reimbursement up to coverage limit, for a legal tow or disablement.
Auto insurance is mandatory in Massachusetts. If you are leasing and/or financing a car, your lender may also have additional insurance requirements in addition to the state minimum requirements.
